Subject: Re: Felzien Family History Yes you are missing something! :) Did you receive the
attachment titled "Johann Christoph Welsin Family" ? Ernst and Fred's
father is Johann Christoph Welsin and their mother is Friedericka Sophia
Rosenkrantz. The children listed on the Johann Christoph Welsin Family
Group Sheet are Ernst and Fred and their siblings. It is a bit confusing
because according to the baptism records Ernst & Fred had the exact same
names.
The family group sheets for Auguste Leonore Fredricke Velsin and the one
for Johann Christian Friederich Schroeder is Ernst and Fred's sister, the one
for Carl Heinrich Rosenkrantz is Ernst and Fred's maternal grandparents, and I
forgot to send you one for Lindhorst, which is another sister.

Here is the family group sheet for the Johann Christoph Welsin Family again
in case you didn't receive the attachment.
Let me know if you need any of the others. I can send you the one on
Lindhorst if you want it.

WELSIN Johann's occupation was a
laborer. This small bit of
information tells us volumes about his life and also helps us to understand why
his sons, Ernst and Fred immigrated to America. As a laborer on area farms he would have
been very knowledgable about
farming and livestock and probably had a love of the land, yet never in his life
would he have had the opportunity to own land for himself. During this time period in Mecklenburg if a man
was a laborer he would always be a laborer. Johann had neither the opportunity to
own land, nor could he have changed his occupation and learned a skill. As a laborer's sons, Ernst and Fred also
could only have been laborers. A
laborer's children did not have the right to learn a skill either, nor could
they own land. There were no future
prospects for them in Mecklenburg.
A laborer also lived a life of poverty. Most of them lived in rented cottages in
the village and went to work each day at the nearby farms. The wages they earned barely covered
their cost of living.
We found it interesting that
vaccinations the children received were recorded in the church record book. They were vaccinated as a baby and again
when they were confirmed. Johann
and Friedericka lost three children to epidemics. The first to die was their second
daughter, Johanna. She died in 1819
at the age of 1 year. At this point
we don't know what the disease was as the word was abbreviated and was an
old-fashioned term that my friend was unfamiliar with, but there was a list of
children who had died from the same disease. The second epidemic that they lost
children to was a measles epidemic in 1828. In this epidemic they lost their oldest
daughter Sophie Friedrike Ida at the age of 12 years and their first-born son
Johann Joachim at the age of 5 years.
Ernst was 5 months old at this time. Notes for Friedericka Sophia
ROSENKRANZ Baptism witnesses were
whiskey brewer, Michel Mein; Sophia
Paetzen of Holzendorf, Friederica Burwigs of Holzendorf.3 Friederica Sophia Rosenkranz
